At the Bacău County Emergency Hospital, the course “Styles and Techniques of Effective Communication” for staff continues. This program reiterates our commitment to the quality of medical care and the well-being of patients, constituting an essential step in creating relationships based on trust and mutual respect.
Launched in September, the program involves over 1,000 employees (doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists), focusing on developing skills for patient interaction, effective teamwork collaboration, and the constructive management of conflicts.
“Your communication style can shape your relationship with each patient, adapting it to their needs and expectations. Patients are different, and approaches must be adjusted according to their level of education, diagnosis, context, and expectations. The patient expects empathy and support – a smile, a caring look, a positive attitude, and active problem-solving, not a sole focus on their difficulties. Our role is to integrate them into the therapeutic process, to be there as partners,” emphasized Doru Huțuțui, a doctoral candidate in organizational management, communication, and leadership specialist.
International studies show that about 70% of medical errors in the United States are due to ineffective communication at all levels – both vertically and horizontally. In Europe, this percentage is around 50%. In Romania, although there is no systematic evaluation of these errors yet, the inclusion of communication skills in employee performance criteria is being considered. Effective communication involves recognizing and managing both one’s own emotions and those of patients, colleagues, or family members.
“When a doctor corrects a nurse aggressively in front of the patient, they risk losing not only the patient’s respect but also the nurse’s support and involvement, who will feel humiliated. In the eyes of the patient, the nurse also loses credibility. In the medical environment, it is vital to show respect and support for colleagues to maintain competence and team cohesion,” explained lecturer Doru Huțuțui.
